On the day that NFL Free Agency kicks off, it might have seemed that the Eagles were going to move forward and keep CB Nnamdi Asomugha as he was due a bonus on the new league year which started at 4pm on Tuesday. But as many expected the Eagles finally pulled the trigger and releasing the free agent bust.
On Tuesday the Eagles announced they released CB Nnamdi Asomugha after only two years in Philadelphia. He spent 32 games in midnight green recording 95 total tackles, 17 pass deflections, and four interceptions in a pathetic two year stint. Whenever the Eagles D gave up a big touchdown through the air, it seemed like you always saw number 24 on your television screen. It was a much needed move and the Eagles wish him the best.
"Coach Kelly and I each had a chance to speak with Nnamdi earlier and he took the news with a lot of class," said Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. "We expected nothing less than that from him. He has been a true pro on and off the field for this organization and our community and we wish him all the best as he continues his NFL career. We spoke to his representatives at the Combine about his future status with the team and wanted to take time to analyze and make a decision. In the end, Coach and I both felt we needed to move in a different direction at the cornerback position for 2013 and beyond."
This basically tells me that Asomugha didn’t want to renegotiate his contract to remain in Philadelphia and the Eagles wanted to move on if he wasn’t willing to restructure. The Eagles picked up the so called “lockdown cornerback” following the lockout in 2011 and thought they struck gold when he signed. But im sure Eagle Nation is wishing they could go back in time to change this….
Eagles To Host TE Casey
A report from John McClain from the Houston Chronicle reports that nearly 14 teams have reached out to Houston Texans TE James Casey including your Philadelphia Eagles. McClain went onto say that Philly is Casey’s first visit.
The 29 year old started nine games in 2012 coming off career highs in catches(34), yards(330) and TDs(3). He has incredible speed and could be a major asset to Chip Kelly’s offense as he brings versatility to line up as a tight end and in the backfield as a fullback catching the football. And he is a quality special teamer.
The Eagles have had issues finding a quality blocking tight end that can catch the football and help in max protection. Casey would fit nicely here in Philadelphia but with that amount of interest im sure Casey would do his diligence and make the rounds before coming up with a decision
