Things just keep on getting better and better for this football team. They blow an 11 point lead and allowed the Cowboys to rack up 28 second half point enroute to their 8th consecutive loss on the season. As the Eagles continue their downwhirl spiral, they aren’t waiting until the end of the season for some changes.
The Eagles on Monday following their 38-33 loss to the Cowboys have fired defensive line coach Jim Washburn after just less than two seasons. This is coming after reports surfaced last week that Washburn was livid to find out management released one of his all time favorite players, DE Jason Babin.
Washburn has had a reputation to be the best at his position and it showed for only one season. He brought in his wide 9 defensive line technique and the Eagles recorded a league high 55 sacks in 2011. Many felt the defense could have similar success moving forward with this deep front four rotation to build around. But teams found a way to slow down the Eagles pass rush by chipping and max protecting. The Eagles couldn’t get any pressure on opposing quarterbacks and they picked apart this secondary week after week all season long. The Eagles currently only have 20 sacks in 2012 and their sack leader isn’t even on the team anymore.
People have been complaining about this system and that it was time to move on even last year. It is a flawed system. It only works if you scheme and have the correct personnel to execute which the Eagles don’t do. The Eagles continue to get gashed on the ground since the beginning of last season. In 2011 the D gave up an average of 112yds a game which was 16th in the NFL and 11 scores on the ground. At least something is consistent on this football team. Through 12 games in 2012, the D is giving up 117yds a game, six rushing touchdowns and 12 runs over 20 plus yards!
They got a middle linebacker that can play the scheme but every time they are in it, they have him in man coverage leaving the middle of the field wide open! Yes the players have to execute the scheme but I still place the blame on the coaches and Andy Reid for not putting them in position. When something isn’t working they have to find a way to adjust and they just don’t do that.
The Eagles have replaced Washburn with former Eagles defensive line coach Tommy Brasher, who served with the Eagles in 1985 and again from 1999-2005. And now maybe we can see what Todd Bowles can really do as defensive coordinator under a scheme he can actually game plan for. Since this defense has given up 25 or more points in 7 consecutive games. It can only go up hill from here right?
