We're learning more about a shelter in place situation over the weekend in Macungie. Police there say a woman came to their station on Saturday after allegedly being beaten by her boyfriend at a Main Street apartment. Police tell us she was taken to the hospital while officers went to the apartment to investigate. Police found the woman's boyfriend, who barricaded himself in the apartment. Police say he eventually climbed out a window on the second floor, ran and jumped over a fence, getting away from officers. That prompted a shelter in place order because he was known to have firearms and because of the alleged attack on his girlfriend. The man was discovered in a storm pipe off of Buckeye Road near Eyer Middle School. Investigators said the man is tied to a series of burglaries in the Slate Belt area and has felony warrants out in Salisbury Township.
Final results of Allentown's latest count of people who are experiencing homelessness are expected to be released today. The Point-in-Time Count is an annual survey of homeless people in the country that's done by local agencies on behalf of the federal government. The survey from last year revealed that approximately 700 people in over 450 households were unsheltered in Lehigh and Northampton counties. Officials say that marked a nearly seven percent increase since before the COVID-19 pandemic but was a decrease from the previous year.
Allentown Police have charged an Orefield woman after investigating the circumstances of a shooting. Officers were called late Saturday afternoon to a home in the 700 block of Harrison Street but didn't find anyone. An unidentified man showed up a short time later at a local hospital with a gunshot wound and they traced the incident back to Sara Torres-Rivera. The 37-year-old was charged with aggravated and simple assault.
A car crashed into a home in Lower Saucon Township just after 10 o'clock Saturday night. It happened in the 1900 block of Leithsville Road. The entire front end of the vehicle was inside the home. One person was taken to the hospital.
A rowhome in Bethlehem caught fire on Sunday afternoon. It happened at a home in the 1100 block of Livingston Street. No injuries have been reported and there's no word yet on what may have caused it.
Authorities in Philadelphia confirmed Sunday night they captured 17-year-old juvenile murder suspect Shane Pryor after he escaped custody and spent four days on the run. Deputy Robert Clark with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force says their plan worked. "Our goal was to shrink his world, cut his resources off and arrest his associates and that's exactly what we accomplished," Clark says. 18-year-old Michael Diggs faces charges related to aiding Pryor's escape and they expect more people to be charged.
A new survey revealed that New Jerseyans are almost evenly split on whether the Garden State is headed in the right direction. The Rutgers-Eagleton poll finds 43 percent of those surveyed think the state is headed in the right direction against 47 percent who do not. Researchers say the number of those surveyed who feel positive about the future of New Jersey is at its lowest point in a decade. A little more than half of those surveyed, 52 percent, think New Jersey is a good to excellent place to live. Governor Phil Murphy's favorability rating remains where it stood in the last poll in November at 46 percent. His unfavorability rating, though, jumped six points from the November poll to 34 percent.
There's another name tossed into the ring for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate from New Jersey -- former Tabernacle mayor Justin Murphy. He becomes the seventh candidate for the Republican nomination to succeed indicted Democratic Senator Bob Menendez. Murphy has also served as GOP municipal chairman in Tabernacle. He won election as Tabernacle's mayor in 2000. He ran unsuccessfully for the Third District seat in Congress in 2008 and 2010.
A familiar face will coach the Eagles offense in 2024. ESPN reports former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore will be hired as the Philadelphia offensive coordinator. Moore spent last season with the Chargers. Kellen will replace Brian Johnson who was fired earlier this month.
